Collection: About Ross

Ross Henderson is a Kwakwaka’wakw artist from Alert Bay, British Columbia, known for over 30 years of dedication to Northwest Coast Indigenous art. Specializing in wood carving and painting, Ross’s work is inspired by the natural beauty of northern Vancouver Island and the cultural traditions of his people. His pieces often feature symbolic imagery, including animals, the sun, and the moon, rooted in both tradition and personal expression.

Entirely self-taught, Ross began carving seriously in 2002, influenced by his brother Jonathan Henderson and fellow artist Trevor Hunt. Today, his work is featured in some of Canada’s leading Indigenous art galleries, such as:

  • Lattimer Gallery (Vancouver)

  • Douglas Reynolds Gallery (Vancouver)

  • I-Hos Gallery (Courtenay)

  • Spirit Gallery, Bill Reid Gallery, and others

His handcrafted paddles, masks, and limited-edition prints are known for selling out consistently, making him a respected and independent artist with a strong collector base.

Now based in Calgary, AB, Ross continues to produce original artwork while expanding his creative reach through Ross Henderson Native Arts (RHNA), a brand founded with the support of his wife, Cherry, who admired his art and encouraged him to share it through clothing. Together, they envisioned a way to blend Ross’s artistry with everyday fashion, giving his culture a platform in a modern and wearable form.

Ross’s mission remains clear: to celebrate Indigenous identity, preserve cultural stories, and offer authentic craftsmanship, whether through gallery pieces or thoughtful clothing design.
